EV towing

Abbotsford EV Tow — BC Hydro Chilliwack Charge

Abbotsford Tow Truck connects Abbotsford EV owners with flatbed-trained operators. Tesla Model 3 stranded between Superchargers, Polestar with a 12V fault, Rivian high-centred on a downtown parkade ramp, Ford Lightning needing transport home, a flatbed-only rig is on the way. Wheel-lift is never used on an electric vehicle, regardless of how short the haul is.

Why EVs need flatbed

12V vs Traction Tesla Recovery

Every modern electric vehicle has permanent-magnet drive motors connected to the wheels. When those wheels spin — even at low speeds — the motors generate electricity that flows backward through the drive inverter. On a wheel-lift tow, two wheels stay on the road and rotate at highway speed for the full trip. The uncontrolled voltage damages the inverter within 20 to 40 kilometres, which becomes an $8,000 to $18,000 repair on a Tesla Model S, Rivian R1T, or Polestar 2.

Even AWD EVs (Tesla Dual Motor, Rivian, Polestar Long Range Dual Motor) have this problem — every wheel connects to a drive motor. There's no safe way to wheel-lift an electric vehicle. Abbotsford flatbed transport is the only method. If a tow company offers wheel-lift for your EV because it's cheaper, walk away and call us. The savings evaporate the moment you need a drive-unit replacement.

EV Tow Flow

Abbotsford EV Flatbed, Breakdown to Service Centre in 4 Steps.

  1. Place the EV in tow mode

If the touchscreen is alive, select transport or jack mode. If the 12V is dead, leave the car parked and tell the operator the screen is dark.

  2. Call and say "electric" first

Lead with the make and model so the operator routes a flatbed. Share state of charge, ambient temperature, location and what failed.

  3. Routing and quote

Operator maps to the closest Tesla, Polestar, Rivian or Ford service centre, confirms cost and arrival time, and stages a flatbed nearby.

  4. Load and transport

Operator winches the EV up the deck with all four wheels off the ground, secures the chassis through manufacturer-approved tie-downs, and tows to the chosen service centre.

Common EV calls

Aberdeen Level 3 EV Drop-Off

The most common Abbotsford EV call is a 12V accessory battery failure. Tesla, Rivian, and Polestar all use a small 12V battery to power door locks, screens, and start-up sequences — separate from the main traction battery. When that 12V dies, the vehicle won't unlock or start even if the main battery is at 90%. Cold weather drains 12V batteries fast, so December-through-February calls in Clearbrook or East Abbotsford driveways run high.

Other common calls: main traction battery drained below emergency reserve (needs flatbed to nearest supercharger), collision damage, tire blowout on Highway 1, or towing after a crash to a Tesla-certified body shop. Our Abbotsford accident recovery team knows Tesla and Rivian body shops in Metro Vancouver. For Highway 1 EV breakdowns, note the exit closest to Whatcom Road, Sumas Way, or Mount Lehman before you call.

Frequently asked

Abbotsford EV Towing FAQ

Why EVs need flatbed only, cost vs standard towing, 12V battery issues, supercharger routing, and 24/7 availability.

Wheel-lift towing damages EV drive motors. Every modern electric vehicle has permanent-magnet drive motors connected directly to the wheels. When those wheels rotate at highway speed during a tow, the motors generate uncontrolled voltage that flows back through the drive inverter. Damage starts within 20 to 40 kilometres. A drive-unit replacement runs $8,000 to $18,000 on a Tesla, Rivian, or Polestar. Flatbed transport is the only safe option.
Yes, moderately — Abbotsford EV towing uses flatbed only, which costs 10-15% more than standard wheel-lift. Base hook-up runs $110 to $175 plus $4 to $7 per loaded kilometre. Overnight and weekend calls add $25 to $50. Long-distance EV tows past 80 km flat-rate. The trade-off: avoiding $8,000+ in inverter damage from an unsafe wheel-lift tow. Ask for the quote on the call before dispatch.
Common problem. If your Tesla, Rivian, or Polestar won't unlock or start but the app shows the main battery at 60%+, the small 12V accessory battery has failed. Cold weather in Clearbrook driveways triggers this often. Sometimes a jump-start to the 12V terminals (through the frunk on Tesla) can get you moving. If not, we tow flatbed to your nearest service center. Our operators know the 12V access on major EV models.
Yes — Abbotsford EV towing routes to your nearest Tesla Supercharger, Rivian service center, or dealer of your choice. If your main battery is drained below emergency reserve, we can flatbed to the nearest supercharger (usually Coquitlam or downtown Vancouver from Abbotsford) so you can recharge and drive home. For service issues, we tow to Tesla Vancouver, Tesla Langley, or your preferred certified body shop. Ask dispatch for routing options.
Yes — 24/7 dispatch, same phone line as standard and flatbed towing. Response times match flatbed timing (25 to 45 minutes core, longer for Highway 1 or outer cities). Fewer flatbed trucks run overnight than during the day, so 2 AM EV calls may take 5 to 10 minutes longer than daytime calls. Dispatch confirms which flatbed truck is closest before quoting your ETA. Cold-weather 12V battery failures spike December through February.

Tesla Model Y went into reduced-power mode on the highway in minus-fifteen weather. Flatbed in 35 minutes, dropped at the service centre. Exactly what I needed.

Polestar 2 high-centred on a downtown parkade ramp. Operator showed up with a low-angle flatbed, lifted off without scraping. Knew where the battery pack ran.

Rivian R1T 12V died at a charger. Operator walked me through the front-trunk manual pull while the flatbed was en route. Boost got it rolling.
